EMERGENCY RESPONSE FOR THE ATHLETE
IN-PERSON ERA RECERTIFICATION COURSE (scroll down to register)
Prerequisite Didatic Work (2 hours)
Choose from a list of nine immersive courses to gain more in-depth knowledge of specific acute injuries and illness. Additional CEUs will be offered for completion of the course and test, with a passing score of 80%.
Synchronous Session (7 hours)
- Introductions and class norms
- EMS systems including National Incident Management and Emergency Action Plans
- Legal issues with a focus on practice acts and scope of care in emergency settings
- Disease transmission
- Primary and secondary assessment
- Airway emergencies including the use of oxygen, asthma, pulse oximeter, and EpiPen
- Cardiac emergencies
a) Review of cardiac emergencies and use of AED
b) CPR will be offered as an elective for students through the American Red Cross (at the end of the day) - Identification, care, and early management of wounds
- Identification, care, and early management of musculoskeletal injuries
a) Extremities
b) Review of current practices for spine-injured athletes and equipment removal
c) Identification, care, and early management of head injuries (concussion and facial)
d) Identification, care, and early management of torso injuries (thorax, abdomen, and genitalia)
Practical Assessment (90 minutes)
Presented with a sports-related scenario, each student will complete the full assessment and care on a partner. A rubric scoring guide will be used for grading with feedback and discussion provided by students and instructors.
