Cogent Steps Brings Emergency Response for the Athlete (ERA) Course to MLB Winter Meetings in Arlington, TX

This December, Cogent Steps brought its Emergency Response for the Athlete (ERA) course to Arlington, Texas, where it was presented to physical therapists (PTs) and athletic trainers (ATs) from Major League Baseball (MLB) during the Winter Meetings. This annual event, a pivotal gathering for MLB executives, agents, and staff, provided the perfect backdrop for sports medicine professionals to sharpen their emergency response skills ahead of spring training and the upcoming MLB season.

Baseball is a sport that demands precision, preparation, and teamwork—not just from players but from the medical professionals who support them. From errant line drives to sudden cardiac events, the ERA course ensures that healthcare providers are ready to step up when their expertise is needed most. One MLB physical therapist highlighted the course’s value and described the “life-saving skills taught through the ERA course through Cogent Steps to be immensely valuable” and that it allowed them “to provide a confident level of emergency care in our professional baseball athletes.”

The ERA curriculum addresses the unique challenges of baseball, from managing high-impact injuries to treating athletes across a broad age spectrum, including prospects and seasoned players. Participants engage in hands-on training for primary and secondary assessments, spinal motion restriction, wound care, CPR/AED use, and managing heat-related illnesses—critical skills for sports medicine professionals working in the high-stakes environment of professional baseball.

The value of ERA training is evident in its alignment with the demands of baseball, where preparation and precision are paramount. “Whether you’re providing coverage for a Saturday morning youth event or for the athlete at the pinnacle of their sport, they each deserve an educated, well-prepared medical provider on their side,” explained Brad Eggebraaten, a Cogent Steps instructor who helped teach the course. “Each of these athletes is depending on their sports medicine teammate to be at the top of their game. The ERA course allows the provider to get up-to-date training in emergent care of the injured athlete so that every athlete can receive the care they need, from the pee wee to the professional athlete. Their life may depend on it.”

By hosting ERA training at the MLB Winter Meetings, Cogent Steps ensured that the league’s top PTs and ATs are not only prepared for the demands of the upcoming season but also empowered to provide the highest standard of care when it matters most.
